Walking Newcastle’s stunning “Bathers Way”, right in the heart of the city, is one of the best CITY CENTER BEACH DESTINATIONS in Australia.
Newcastle’s Bathers Walk highlights the city’s history and stretches 6 kilometers in length.
Its southern end is Merewether Beach, home to one of only nine national surfing reserves in New South Wales. In fact its the home break for former world champion Mark Richards.
Merewether also boasts the largest ocean baths in the southern hemisphere.
Eventually, the Bathers Way takes you past Dixon Park where you start climbing the headland above to one of the best spots to watch migrating humpback whales during winter.
It takes 137 steps to experience spectacular city and coastal views including ANZAC Monuments & Memorials. 11,000 Hunter Valley servicemen and women enlisted during WW1.
The views are breathtaking 160 meters above the sea, close to a historic preserved precinct next to the new. An area popular amongst hang gliders and para-gliders.
Newcastle Beach is the city’s action heart close to the Newcastle Hunter Street Mall dotted with cafe’s, beach kiosks and hotels ….. and the redeveloped Hunter River Esplanade.
Access to this historic city center and its bustling active port is easy by Light Rail
Well worth visiting only 2 hours north of Sydney.
