Ancient Lake Mungo is a starkly beautiful destination in deep western New South Wales, a part of a chain of dried-up lake beds and sand dunes which comprise an archaeological wonderland.
It was here that the aboriginal remains of Mungo Lady and Mungo Man, said to be roughly 40,000 years old, were discovered.
The historic village and old river port of Pooncarie is the closest upstream town to Mungo National Park and is a stop on the Darling River Run touring route. Famous as the last stop for ill-fated explorers Burke and Wills, the tiny town of Menindee draws visitors for its stunning natural wonders and thanks to recent rains, the landscape is now brilliantly green and teeming with bird-life.
